General advice for walkers
Please bring good walking shoes or boots and clothing for all weathers, plus walking poles, water. Both routes are generally on good paths. The section through Bamff estate on the longer route could be muddy and uneven in places. There is a steady climb from Alyth to the top of Alyth Hill (295m). Registration 10:00 - 12:00 on the day is at the Alyth Hotel (map reference 246486 OS sheet 53) which is off the square in the centre of the town. Location map for Alyth attached. Even if you have pre-registered online or by phone, please sign in at the Alyth Hotel before you start your walk and sign out when you finish. This is essential so that the organisers know that all walkers have returned safely. First aid cover will be provided. In emergency contact 07762061384 (store this number in your mobile). Route maps will be provided on the day. Parking is available on the street and public toilets are available in the square. Buses (service number 57) run from Dundee bus station (10:00) to Alyth square on Sundays.
This year's TICR walks take place in the beautiful countryside around the Perthshire town of Alyth. Please register for both walks online or by phone and sign in at the Alyth Hotel on the day. The Alyth Hotel has kindly allowed the use of part of the hotel for the day, and will provide tea and scones for weary legs on your return.
Two competitions which are optional, form part of the day's activities. A nature quiz with prizes for children, will form part of the guided nature walk in the Den of Alyth. All walkers are invited to take part in a photographic competition. Digital images on any theme taken on either route will be transferred to a laptop computer for display in the Alyth Hotel, where walkers can vote for their favourite image. A voucher for Jessops will go to the photographer whose image proves most popular.
Short route 4 miles - Den of Alyth
From Alyth Square the route crosses the ancient pack bridge over the Alyth Burn past the saw mill and into the Den of Alyth. The Den is an area of special scientific interest with unique flora and fauna. The walk follows the good paths in a loop which allows walkers to take in the beauty of the lush vegetation and ancient natural rock outcrops which make the Den such a special place. A guided nature tour of the Den has been arranged, led by the local countryside ranger starting at 11:30. If you are interested please book your place in advance. Details and meeting point for the guided nature walk at the Alyth Hotel on the day. If you prefer, make your own way round the route which will be clearly marked.
Longer route 7 miles - Hill of Alyth
This route takes in some spectacular views from the top of Alyth Hill dropping down to part of the Cateran Trail which follows a very scenic track through the Bamff estate (courtesy of the Ramsay family) where walkers will be treated to a unique opportunity to view a beaver habitat and sightings of wild boar (enclosed). Emerging from the Bamff estate walkers will then descend down the Den of Alyth back to Alyth square and the Alyth Hotel. This route will also be well marked.
